What You’ll Need
Before you start, compile the following items:
- Tape measure
- Utility knife or heavy-duty scissors, or tin snipes
- Rubbing alcohol or degreaser
- Rubber Mallet
- Cleaning rag
- Accordion boot
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Measure the Gap
Check your measurements. Measure the distance from your truck cab’s rear window to the front of the camper shell’s window. The accordion boots is designed to flex depending of the size between 2 to 7 inches. Measure around the access opening to make sure you have enough material to complete the job. In this case it is better to have a little too much. Instead of have too little material.
Step 2: Clean the Surfaces
Use rubbing alcohol or a good degreaser to clean the areas where the boot will make contact. Any dirt or grease can possibly prevent a proper seal.
Wipe both:
- Around the rear window opening of the truck cab
- Around the front window opening of the camper shell or sleeper
Step 3: Confirm Measurements
Before install the boot in its place, measure the boot and the opening to make sure they are the same length. For best results make sure the openings lines up with both windows.
Adjust the positioning until it looks centered and symmetrical.
Step 4: Attach to Truck Cab
Starting at the middle bottom, slide or press the spring steel groove of the boot over the cab window frame on the pinch weld. This should create a tight, friction-fit seal.
Step 5: Attach to Camper Shell
Repeat the process on the camper shell side. Align the boot, press into place, and secure it evenly across the full contact area.
Step 6: Seam the Ends
The basic concept is to..
- create a flap on one end to the boot to overlap the other end
- Butt up the spring clip section by notching it out which create the flap in the accordion part of the boot
- Then using glue, bond the accordion boot to the other end. It is recommenced to use cyanoacrylate (Super Glue). Do not use any petroleum based glues as it will react to the rubber.
Step 7: Inspect and Adjust
Stand back and look at the seal. The boot should:
- Be centered between windows
- Sit flat and flush without twists
- Compress slightly but not be under tension
Give the entire connection a gentle tug — it should feel snug and secure.
Final Check: Leak Test
You can do a basic leak test by:
- Running a hose over the seal and checking for moisture inside
- Shining a flashlight through from one side at night (look for light leaks)
Maintenance Tips
- Check the seal every few months
- Clean dirt and grime to prevent wear
- Avoid petroleum based cleaners
- Clean with mild soap and water
